I’ve posted this before already, but I’m not a big fan of the Christmas holiday season.
I could go on ad nauseam about why I don’t like the holidays, the over-commercialization, the playing overandoverandover again of the same five Christmas songs in every mall, restaurant and elevator you walk into, the obnoxious ads assaulting you from all direction at all times to buy buy buy and let’s not forget the uncomfortable office parties where you have to endure watching your hopelessly out-of-rhythm co-workers dance.
I don’t even like tinsel and to be perfectly frank, find many of the decorations to be just garish looking to my minimalist sensibilities (BTW, who’s the flippin’ idiot who came up with inflatable snowman which every second yard now seems to have and how can you have a mega-store for Christmas?) . After you watch this video, you’ll also understand why I think Santa Claus is just shy of this side of creepy.
Now, I don’t want to come across as a total Grinch. There are some pluses to the holiday season.
There are the new breed of subversive anti-Christmas and Orphan Christmas get-togethers, like the Ugly Christmas Sweater/Jumper parties which are now a bona fide scene in themselves.
There are the hidden-jewels of less well-known but equally awesome holiday songs. There’s the time off, to just decompress, chill out, sleep in with your cozy flannel pyjamas in cozy flannel bed sheets…
Drink lots of warm chai ( the secret ingredient to a stellar chai tea is using Carnation’s Evaporated Milk or condensed milk, like the chai wallahs in India or Malaysia use)…
Catching up on reading and catching up with films at the cinema…
There is the Winter Solstice and the knowledge that now days will start to get longer. There’s also seeing friends and of course, New Year’s Eve, which for some reason, always resonated more with me.
The one motif of Christmas I do like is the one of angels. I don’t mean the small, chubby kids in long nightgowns and trumpets in hand or what organized religion tells us about them. I mean the idea of these beings/entities who actually like us human beings, like watching out over us, like helping us out.
The idea of guardian spirits and helpers is as old as humanity itself, probably because by all accounts, they are far older than us as well. I’m not going to go over what the Abrahamic religions tell us about angels or what Buddhists and Hindus say about their equivalent in the form of bodhisattvas either. What intrigues me the most is that, I think they really are, in essence, lifeforms and life energies which exist on a far higher frequency, beyond our reality hack, which if we’re lucky, we can be blessed to tune into or bump into sometime.
It’s not unheard of. I mean many, many sources call angels nothing less than pure beings of light. When the Prophet Ezekiel was taken up to the heavens in a vehicle described as “wheels within wheels”, that could just as easily be benevolent aliens for all we really know. (If you get the chance, check out the Nicholas Cage film “Knowing”. Garbage movie but some of the sequences involving these angels/aliens/being of light are pretty cool).
Many, many others have had experiences where messages and information were given to them under extraordinary circumstances.
There is a softer energy during that week between Christmas and New Year’s. Maybe these angels have something to do with it, I don’t know. Some people will be celebrating Kwanzaa during that time. Other people just call it Holy Week, and others, like your’s truly just try to feel it and soak it in.
“Something or someone has hurt you, and you are walking along the street feeling discouraged and overwhelmed. But then you come across a face, a look, of such beauty you go home feeling comforted, released. Heaven has just sent you someone to give you courage again. Don’t be taken in: if you chance upon such a look, it is not that person who has given it to you but an entity, which for a moment entered that person in order to help you.
Such experiences make you realize you are constantly in touch with thousands of benevolent entities. They come and seek you out; you are never abandoned. Why do you not sense that? Why add to the real sufferings you experience by believing you are alone, deprived of all help? For a while you were feeling crushed, and then suddenly you regained strength and courage. So, thank all the beings that came to you. The more aware and grateful you are, the more you will attract them to you.
Between man and God there exist spiritual beings, which the Christian tradition, inspired by the Jewish tradition, refers to as the angelic orders. The word ‘order’ implies there is a difference in level between these entities. In descending order, their names are: Seraphs, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. The angels, in other words, are closest to human beings and this is why they have been charged with watching over us. The Seraphs and Cherubim at the top of the hierarchy on the other hand are not even aware that people inhabit earth and will never be given the task of staying with us. They concern themselves with solar systems and galaxies and very rarely does one of them go to meet a human being. A Seraph travels through space at the speed of lightning. If you happen to be in the right place, vigilant and ready to seize some of its celestial radiations, you will be so enlightened, bedazzled, that the effects will persist for the rest of your life. But you will never stop him; he will continue his journey through the infinite space. “
